There is thought to have been seven different variants of the Bell punch and here can be seen two different mechanism set ups.

The one on the left is a PN punch made before 1914 (metal is German Silver) the one on the right is a ZN punch made after 1914 and made of Nickle silver.
I have a punch as shown on the right - with window showing meter - n.50315
It seems to jam intermittently. I noticed a return spring fitted to the sliding catch underneath the striker. I think this catch is the culprit, as it is stepped and is supposed to slide out of the way and then return. Any ideas please? The centre pin is sensed by the ticket to release the cutter to start the process.

I bought my first Bell Punch in 1959, and wrote to the Bell Punch Company asking for information. Their Systems Division very kindly replied to the effect that my machine, number 42620, had been issued to Northern General in 1921, and subsequently reissued to the LGOC in 1922 "where it remained until these machines were withdrawn shortly after the last war". (sic)

There was a record of Bell Punch operators but this was believed to have been lost when the factory closed,it would certainly be very useful today,dating Bell Punches is also difficult punches with serial numbers of 40000 + are from the early twenties,does anyone else have any pointers to dating / identifying Bell Punches ?.

Is there any way of telling were BP punches came from using the serial number
