This machine I believe went into service with Sheffield Transport in 1970/71. It had been modified for decimal currency by restricting the movement of the levers. This photo shows the insides while I was giving it a clean. The printing surfaces were badly clogged with muck. Also I was repairing the serial number mechanism as it no longer incremented. It turned out to be two teeth missing on the only plastic cog in the whole machine.

Hi, I've just picked up a TIM machine with the date stuck at FE35 and the ticket stamp shows Bolton C. Transport... what kind of ink would be best to invigorate that which remains and would I be guessing right at using meths to clean the printing internals of "muck" :o)

It's all metal around there apart from (in my case) one plastic cog on the serial number counter so meths shouldn't hurt. I used a solvent called Inhibisol which when brushed on seemed the flush away much of the gunk in there. I used a typewriter typeface cleaning brush with it. It has very short stiff bristles and cleaned the ink from the printing parts nicely. I'm sure an old toothbrush would do a similar job if it doesn't dissolve first :-)
I bought some Reiner ink from ebay. All I could get was black. Not ideal but it was the right stuff. It is oil based and printed nice and even.
