A big market for Bell Punch etc when you think of how many cabs there were/are in the U.K.Very nice pictures amazing to think these meters worked without electricity ,complicated bits of kit,slightly before my time but i remember seeing these manual meters in the old films,in particular Carry on cabbing were Sid James trains a driver up on one.
Not sure about these older versions but more modern meters are linked to the gearbox .
Interestingly there were private hire cars running in the Castle point district area of Essex that calculated there fares from the trip meter on the speedo as late as 1990, as i was involved in locating a meter supplier,also Wayfarer started out producing taxi cab meters.
