Needless to say, the repro Excel artwork is only necessary if you don't have a decent photograph or indeed an original plate to scan!! .... the only picture I had at hand was distorted, blurred and was off a quite badly scratched and dented original plate, so it was quicker to produce a new artwork master using the 'draw and shapes' tools in Excel, than it would have been to Photoshop the original image ... the new Excel artwork is also 100% sharper than one could likely achieve with a tarted-up scaned photo .... I was pleased with the results too.
Quite simple in Excel, ... import a photograph of the plate your require to reproduce, scale it up to 1:1 (full size), use the 'shapes' tools in the 'Draw' tab, match the shapes and text as over lays to the original imported image, then when you are happy with the fonts and alignment of the linework, delete the image layer and hey presto one replica sign artwork master is complete! .... print it off on 'hi-res' glossy photo paper, laminate the outer face with self adhesive clear plastic film, carefully cut out the image with a craft knife, and 'Pritstick' it into place. Good enough for a cosmetic overhaul says I ...
A better plate could be used by printing the Excel artwork off onto tracing paper, then running it through a Dyeline printer with photo-sensitive aluminium sheet, we used to do that where I worked years ago, but these days maybe a high street print shop could offer a cheap metal faced film printing option using a digital negative of the same artwork ....
